Governor Warner Invites State Employees to Help Victims of Hurricane Katrina

— Special fund drive to aid selected charities —

Governor Mark R. Warner announced today that Virginia state employees will have an opportunity to provide financial support to the thousands of persons throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and other parts of the South who were displaced or injured by Hurricane Katrina.

Through a special fund drive, employees may make monetary donations to selected charities through the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC), the authorized workplace giving campaign for the state workforce. The participating CVC charities designated to receive employee contributions are The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Each charity is directly involved in providing medical care, food or lodging to those left homeless by the hurricane, which has been described as the worst natural disaster in the nation's history.

"Members of our state workforce have a proud history of stepping-up to do all they can to help in times of need, and we certainly saw countless examples of that when Isabel impacted the Commonwealth two years ago," Governor Warner said. "And just as employees last year showed their compassion for the victims of the Southeast Asia tsunami by contributing $75,000, I am certain they will once again open their hearts and checkbooks to those in need in the Gulf state region."
