Today, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) blasted House Republicans following passage of their devastating tax bill, which eliminates key deductions for middle-class Americans.
"I am deeply troubled by today's passage of the House Republicans' devastating tax plan that will raise taxes on 36 million middle-class households and eliminate key deductions for working families around the nation," said Rep. Espaillat. "When this plan explodes the deficit, Republicans will call for spending cuts to critical initiatives like SNAP, TANF, Pell Grants, and Medicaid that the poor and underserved communities depend on. Today's vote is a slap in the face of middle-class families that rely on deductions like those for state and local taxes, student loan interest, and medical expenses. My fight continues as Speaker Paul Ryan and Republicans shamefully have prioritized the wealthiest Americans and big corporations that continue to ship jobs overseas on the backs of hardworking middle-class families. New York deserves better than this, and we deserve a real tax reform that will put the middle class first and give our communities and our families a chance to succeed."
