Statement by Senator Reed on Supreme Court Justice Nomination Process

Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) stated, -The confirmation of a Justice to the Supreme Court is one of the most consequential processes the Senate must undertake. It will require thorough research, review and discussion of the nominee's qualifications. Judge Roberts will have the opportunity to explain his record before the Judiciary Committee, and I look forward to using that time to carefully study Judge Roberts' record and responses to questioning during the Judiciary hearings.

"I am glad that Justice O'Connor has stated that she will remain on the Court until a replacement is confirmed so that the Senate can conduct a full review without any artificial time constraints.

"I do hope that Judge Roberts is dedicated to the highest standards of our legal system and understands the importance of building consensus, and I look forward to learning more about Judge Roberts from the Judiciary Committee's hearings."
