Congressman Johnson makes progress with Television Academy for diversity

Following the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept.17, Congressman Hank Johnson, a founding member of the Congressional Caucus for Advancement of Studio, Talent and Film Diversity, was inspired to write a letter to the Television Academy in hopes of addressing the lack of diversity and misrepresentation of Latino actors winning this prestigious award.

"Equal rights for others is something I have always felt strongly about and will continue to fight for," said Congressman Johnson, who also serves as a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee. "I congratulate the Television Academy for the work they have done to acknowledge achievements by minorities both in front and behind the camera. But there is still more work to be done; particularly with regard to Latino actors."

"Mr. Maury McIntyre, who is President and COO of the Television Academy, called me immediately after reading my letter and acknowledged the problem," said Congressman Johnson. "Research shows that only nine Latinos have won a total of 13 Emmys in the entire history of the Emmy Awards. Because the Emmys represent the best in television, myself and Mr. McIntyre are looking at ways to address this problem head on. I appreciate our call and look forward to continued, open dialogue to achieve diversity for everyone, no matter their sex, race or national origin."
