Letter to Michael Crapo, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, and Sherrod Brown, Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee - Beatty Calls on Senate Banking Committee to Oppose Garrett Export-Import Bank Nomination

Dear Chairman Crapo and Ranking Member Brown:

I write to urge your opposition to the confirmation of former Representative Scott Garrett's nomination to be President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States.

As a former colleague of Mr. Garrett in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Committee on Financial Services, I believe that Mr. Garrett's nomination to lead the Export-Import Bank is not in the best interest of the mission and objectives of the Bank, or in the best interests of the American people and businesses that rely on the Bank to export American manufactured goods and services. Then-Representative Scott Garrett was one of the most vocal opponents to the Export-Import Bank in the U.S. House of Representatives and Committee on Financial Services. Not only did he repeatedly vote against legislation to reauthorize the Bank, but he also made several troublesome comments, such as describing the Bank as "crony capitalism," "taxpayer welfare," "un-American," and even suggesting that it brings harm to "American families on a daily basis." Comments like these calls into question his commitment and dedication in carrying out his potential responsibilities as President of the Export-Import Bank.

I understand that, as granted through the U.S. Constitution, it is within the prerogative of the United States Senate to advise and consent on the nominations of the President of the United States. However, as a former colleague of Mr. Garrett, and as a Member of Congress that represents many companies that have been able to export manufactured goods and services abroad with help from the Export-Import Bank, I find that I must strongly urge opposition to Mr. Garrett's nomination.
