Gianforte Continues to Strengthen Sanctions Against Terrorists and Their Sponsors

Montana Congressman Greg Gianforte this week voted to approve stronger sanctions against an Iranian regime that continues to sponsor terrorism and enlarge its intercontinental nuclear weapons programs in violation of the latest U.S. agreement.

"The current regime in Iran continues to be a serious threat to regional and global security," Congressman Gianforte said. "Steps are needed to cease Iran's aggression and brutality, which is why I strongly support these measures to hold Iran accountable, obstruct its sponsorship of terrorism, restrict the flow of weapons, and end its human rights abuses. And, unquestionably, there is no alternative but to prevent this terrorist regime from developing nuclear weapons."

Congressman Gianforte's votes continue his record of supporting tougher sanctions against countries and organizations that foster instability, terror, and weapons escalation. In late July, he approved the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (H.R. 3364), aimed at sanctioning North Korea, Russia, and Iran.

The measures approved by the House this week are specifically aimed at Hezbollah and Iran, after the country's regime failed to uphold an agreement signed by the Obama administration.

The Iran Ballistic Missiles and International Sanctions Enforcement Act (H.R. 1698) requires a comprehensive investigation to identify and sanction companies, banks, and individuals involved in Iran's missile program, and it penalizes those who illegally trade conventional weapons with Iran.

The Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Amendments Act (H.R. 3329) increases sanctions on countries and organizations that provide weapons to Hezbollah, and it targets the terrorist group's fundraising and recruiting efforts, including attempts to crowdsource donations to support its fighters.

The Sanctioning Hezbollah's Use of Civilians as Defenseless Shields Act (H.R. 3345) identifies and sanctions Hezbollah commanders complicit in, or responsible for directing the use of human shields.

H.Res. 359 is a resolution urging the European Union to designate Hezbollah in its entirety as a terrorist organization.
