Polis reaches across the aisle to ban the manufacture, sale, and use of bump-stocks

Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., signed on to bipartisan legislation today that would ban the manufacture, sale, and use of bump stocks and other similar devices used to convert firearms into illegal automatic weapons, moving forward on promises he made after the Las Vegas shooting to take concrete action on gun safety legislation.

"We can preserve the Second Amendment while helping to avoid another mass shooting, but we can only do so if we rise above the usual partisan gridlock. A basic step we can take now is outlawing the manufacture, sale, and use of bump-stocks and accessories that are used to convert firearms into illegal automatic weapons," said Polis. "The bill I proudly co-sponsored defines these devices clearly and specifically, and as a supporter of our Second Amendment rights, I am confident it will not impact legal gun owners who choose to own guns for defense, sport, or hunting. With this bipartisan approach, I hope that in some significant way, we can begin to reduce the tragic bloodshed of mass shootings in our country."

"Bump stocks" are devices that use a semi-automatic weapon's recoil to allow it to fire at a rate mirroring that of a fully automatic weapon -- 400 to 800 rounds a minute. These devices are legal, unregulated, widely available, and can be purchased online for as little as $100. Their sole purpose is to exacerbate the rate of fire.
