Today, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement in response to the horrific mass shooting that occurred the final night of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival near the Mandalay Bay.
"My heart is heavy following the horrendous attack in Las Vegas, and I offer my sincere condolences and prayers for each of the victims, those who were injured, and to each of the families affected by this deadly mass shooting. As we join as a nation to embrace the survivors and families who lost loved ones, we commend each of the first responders who answered the calls of those who were in needed.
"As authorities continue to investigate the motive behind this senseless attack, we cannot remain silent on the need for stronger parameters on gun ownership in America. We must do more, collectively and in unity. I introduced H.R. 1278, the Ghost Guns Are Guns Act, earlier this year to require federal background checks before any individual can purchase a gun, including unassembled kits and unfinished receivers. My bill would ensure that individuals who would otherwise be barred from purchasing firearms would not be able to purchase a gun assembly kit online under a current loophole.
"It is my hope that my congressional colleagues, regardless of their party affiliation, can come together once and for all to find a better solution to prevent future gun tragedies similar to what we witnessed in Las Vegas."
