Nadler Responds to Reported Anti-Israel Comment by Cindy Sheehan
August 15, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement today after learning that Cindy Sheehan, the war mother who has been camping outside the President's ranch in Crawford, may have blamed the death of her son on Israel.

"I've just seen a report that Cindy Sheehan wrote a letter to Nightline in which she states that her son lost his life to protect Israel, not America. This report, while still unconfirmed, is extremely disturbing.

It is unfortunate that some people who make perfectly legitimate points about the war in Iraq insist on bringing up false and unsupported claims that Israel is somehow responsible for the actions of the Bush Administration in Iraq.

These erroneous claims discredit opposition to the war and undermine the standing of Israel, the only truly democratic state in Middle East. Those who are legitimately opposed to the war in Iraq have no choice but to distance themselves from others who try to connect opposition to the war with lies about Israel.

I cannot and will not be associated with any anti-Israel demagoguery or propaganda, and therefore, if the comments in question are substantiated, I call on President Bush not to meet with Cindy Sheehan or with anyone who engages in such demagoguery."
