Statement Of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell On Criticism Of Judge John Roberts' Tenure In The Reagan Administration

U.S. Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell today reacted to liberal Democrats' most recent attacks on Judge John Roberts, President Bush's Supreme Court nominee.

According to a July 5 Washington Post report, Democrats and their allies described an opposition strategy weeks before a nominee was even announced to replace departing Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. According to the Post, their plan consisted of: 1) complaining that White House consultation with Senators about the nominee is insufficient; 2) painting the nominee as extreme; and 3) demanding confidential and privileged documents.

"These latest attacks on Judge Roberts are simply part of a pre-planned strategy to paint him in an unfavorable light, regardless of the facts. Apparently, their view is that being an able and respected lawyer for President Ronald Reagan and his policies makes you a member of the ‘radical right,'" said Senator McConnell. "That view is certainly belied by the facts, chief among them that Ronald Reagan is one of our most popular and revered presidents and was re-elected by 49 of the 50 states."
