Key Public Health Priorities Pass Through House

Statement

Friend-

A large portion of my professional life has been spent in the public health field. Prior to serving in Congress, I earned a Master's Degree in Public Health and spent 26 years working for Virginia's Department of Health--so I understand many of the challenges people face when it comes to accessing quality, affordable care and the role the government plays in supporting innovative biomedical research.

As Co-Chair of the Public Health Caucus, public health is one of my top priorities when representing you in Congress. Just this week, Congress passed H.R. 3354, the Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act, which includes the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill. Included in the bill is an increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health by $1.8 billion over the previous year, which supports research for Alzheimer's disease and pediatric cancer and includes a provision that bars federal research funds from being used on fetal tissue procured from abortion. The legislation also provides resources to combat the tragic opioid epidemic, strengthen pandemic flu preparedness, protect Americans from disease outbreaks, and address bioterrorism readiness.

I'm proud to stand for common sense policy that spurs innovation and provides resources to better public health.
Please do not hesitate to contact me anytime an issue that concerns you comes before the House of Representatives.

It's an honor to serve you and Virginia's First District in the People's House.
