My Focus is on Values

Statement

Friend-

Like you, I believe our nation's laws must protect the vulnerable and the weak, whether they be elderly, disabled, or unborn--I am committed to working hard for families in the First District by upholding family values. As such, I wanted to update you on some of the things I've been doing recently.

In the last several weeks, I've had the opportunity to meet with local leaders in our faith community and other organizations that are working to make our world a better place. Among these organizations is The Haven: a shelter located in Warsaw, where individuals are able to find safety from sexual assault and intimate partner violence, while simultaneously building violence-free lives. I was proud to share with them the work the House has been doing to combat human trafficking and support victims of abuse.

Recently, with my full support, the House passed H.R. 2200, the Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Authorization Act of 2017, reauthorizing $130 million in funding to stop human trafficking and provide aid to victims. In addition to providing tools to U.S. departments to combat the problem, the bill will also provide education to susceptible minors who could be vulnerable to traffickers, incentivize hotels to train staff to spot the signs of trafficking, require airlines to train pilots and flight attendants on spotting trafficking, and encourage survivors to work with government agencies to prevent trafficking.

Additionally, I was fortunate enough to meet with local community faith leaders at Lottsburg's Apostle Bibbens of Zion Church; we discussed the power of faith and the need for pastors and churches to be informed and engaged with what is happening in Washington. Moreover, we spoke about the importance of securing and strengthening religious liberties in the Commonwealth. At the end of our discussion, I asked the pastors to pray for our elected leaders; after all, these are trying times, and now, more than ever, the power of faith and community are needed.

As Congress gets back to work, please know I will promote legislation that protects the vulnerable and the weak, and be an advocate for the family values we, in Virginia's First District, hold dear.
