Boosting Workforce Development in Virginia

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Dear Friend -

Knowing of your interest in education and workforce development, I wanted to update you on my recent work in this critical area.
Last week, the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (FY18 NDAA) with my strong support. This bill is the main mechanism through which Congress "provides for the common defense" of our nation. It equips, supplies, and trains our troops; cares for them and their families; and sets national security policy in a dangerous world.
Since the bill also authorizes Navy shipbuilding, I was able to add language in the FY18 NDAA based on legislation I introduced called the Domestic Maritime Centers of Excellence Act (H.R. 2286). That bill is intended to advance the capabilities of two-year community and technical colleges to assist the federal government and maritime industry in securing the talent pipeline for domestic maritime industry jobs.
A well-trained, skilled maritime workforce is critical for our nation's economy and national security. Advancing the capabilities of community and technical colleges - such as Rappahannock and Tidewater Community College - to assist the federal government and industry in securing the talent pipeline for the domestic maritime industry will mean more shipbuilders and repairmen to sustain and expand trade and grow our Navy's Fleet.
If this provision is adopted in the final version of the FY18 NDAA, shipyards in Virginia and around the country will benefit from the additional workers the new centers of excellence will provide so that we remain a prosperous maritime nation.
I will keep you updated as this bill moves through the legislative process and please continue to contact me anytime an issue that concerns you is before Congress.
It's an honor to serve you and Virginia's First District in the People's House.

Sincerely,
Rob
