Should We Fund A Border Wall?

Statement

Dear Friend -

Next week, the House will consider a bill to fund our nation's national security needs.

And, as with any government funding measure, there are critical debates to be had about what sorts of polices we want to pursue in the upcoming year and beyond. In this bill spending levels will be decided for defense and veterans programs, and other critical agencies. So it's an important bill that will soon be before the House.

One of the issues expected to be addressed is funding for the construction and expansion of a wall along our border with Mexico. Proponents say additional, larger walls are needed to reduce the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States from across our southern border. Opponents of the wall say it will hurt our relations with Mexico and that we should enact immigration reform to control illegal immigration.

My own view is that we need a comprehensive approach to combating illegal immigration. We must have walls and physical barriers at certain areas along the southern border. But we also need to leverage new technologies like unmanned aerial vehicles and to reduce the number of visa overstays by implementing a mandatory biometric entry/exit system. We also need to focus on enforcing existing immigration law.

I want to know what you think.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me. Your opinion helps shape my thinking as I represent you in Washington.

Sincerely,

Rob
