Today, Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement in recognition of the 5th Anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
"The DACA program has been transformative to the lives of DACA recipients and since its implementation five years ago today, the program has generated tremendous economic growth for cities, states and our nation," said Rep. Adriano Espaillat.
"Since the DACA program launched in 2012, nearly 800,000 young people have been reviewed and approved by federal officials to receive temporary and renewable work permits and social security numbers. The program has afforded immigrant youth tremendous opportunities and a renewed sense of hope for their trajectory in America. However, with the ongoing attacks on the immigrant community by the Trump Administration, the fate of DACA remains unknown and the program is under imminent threat, putting DREAMers at risk for deportation.
"It is critical that as we recognize the fifth anniversary of the DACA program, we take immediate action to protect these young, hardworking DREAMers who contribute to our communities and boost our economy, creating jobs, and raising wages for U.S. citizens and our country as a whole."
