Statement on withdrawal from Trans Pacific Partnership

Statement

Date: Jan. 23, 2017
Issues: Trade

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statement today on President Donald Trump's executive action to withdraw from the Trans Pacific Partnership.

I support President Trump's actions today to withdraw the United States from the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Representing a state that has lost critical manufacturing jobs under NAFTA, I've viewed the TPP with skepticism from the beginning. When its details were finally revealed, I knew it would be a bad deal for Maine, which is why I voted against giving it fast-track authority in Congress. I am proud to be part of a broad coalition that has long opposed TPP because of the negative effects it would have on environmental protections, workers' rights, food safety, and more.

While I can't say I agree with all of the actions the President took today--including crippling reproductive health around the world by reinstating the global gag rule--TPP is certainly one of the areas where we agree.
