Hastings Introduces Bipartisan Resolution Supporting a Concurrent Track Approach to the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process

Statement

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) introduced a House Resolution expressing support for addressing the Arab-Israeli conflict in a concurrent track with the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and commending Arab and Muslim-majority states that have improved bilateral relations with Israel. The concurrent track approach, sometimes referred to as the "outside-in" approach, encourages Arab and Muslim-majority states to improve bilateral relations with Israel as Israel and the Palestinian Authority concurrently work to advance the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. "The Israeli-Palestinian conflict presents an immensely difficult challenge. I continue to support a two-state solution, negotiated between the State of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and resulting in two states for two peoples, living side-by-side in peace, security, and mutual recognition," said Congressman Alcee L. Hastings. "In recent years, Israel and some of her Arab neighbors have worked to address common challenges and improve bilateral relations. This engagement is commendable, and it presents a new opportunity for improving the outlook of the Middle East. Although there are rarely, if ever, easy solutions to challenges as complex as bringing lasting peace to the Middle East, Congress should encourage and support those states willing to engage in that endeavor. I am pleased to introduce this resolution today, and thank Representatives Engel and Schweikert for joining me."

"I have long supported a two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and I applaud countries in the Middle East that are considering improving their relations with Israel. For several years, I have been hearing the same messages from our Arab allies and from Israel, and I am optimistic. I am proud to support the Hastings-Schweikert resolution that sends a message that the United States supports advancing a two state solution and greater cooperation between Israelis and Arabs," said Congressman Eliot Engel.

"Any Member of Congress who wishes to see the State of Israel live in peace must be heartened to see the increased level of engagement between the State of Israel and her Arab and Muslim-majority neighbors," said Congressman David Schweikert. "The belief in the vitality of improved bilateral relations between Israel and her neighbors is nothing new, but encouraging Israel's neighbors to build strong mutually beneficial relationships and trust is imperative to establishing the relationships necessary to finally move past the old road blocks the peace process has faced. Bold leadership is necessary, and we commend any nation that comes to the table in honesty and good faith."
