Celebrating the Successes of Women

Statement

Dear Friends,

Women's History Month is a time to celebrate the successes of women in our communities and throughout our nation. This tradition was jumpstarted in 1978 in our state of California by a school district in Sonoma. The celebration spread across the country leading to an official declaration by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, proclaiming the second week of March for the history of women. In 1981, Congress passed legislation to create Women's History Week, beginning in March of 1982. Five years later, Congress moved to designate the entire month of March as Women's History Month.

While there are still many avenues in need of advancement of women's rights, we can take time this month to appreciate the pioneers who forged the way for women and girls who dare to be courageous and make a difference in our district, state, and the United States of America.
