Congressman Gregory W. Meeks released the following statement regarding the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special prosecutor, leading the investigation into President Trump's ties to Russia:

"One revelation after another led the DOJ to finally appoint a special prosecutor and I applaud the DOJ's decision to follow through. The multitude of Americans who have great concern about President Trump's ties to Russia deserve nothing less than a thorough and impartial investigation free of political influence.

"While this appointment was necessary it isn't sufficient; we still need to establish an independent commission immediately. I hope my Republican colleagues will follow suit and do what is right by the American people."
