Suozzi Statement on LIRR Service Disruptions and Delays

Statement

Date: May 11, 2017
Issues: Transportation

Congressman Tom Suozzi issued the following statement today regarding the ongoing LIRR service disruptions and delays.

"The LIRR delays, and service disruptions have gotten out of control. I was planning on staying out of it, but it has gone too far.

"I spoke with the CEO of Amtrak and the President of the LIRR. They have done a poor job communicating a plan to address this very real problem which has been decades in the making.

"They are both train professionals. They should lay out the outlines of a plan today and the details by next week. It is clear that some of Penn Station must be closed down with a robust plan to address these problems once and for all.

"Any disruption should affect a limited number of trains (less than 10%) and should be spread fairly throughout the system.

"They must communicate a clear plan with alternatives for commuters that will cause the least inconvenience.

"This is an antiquated, complex, over capacity facility with a poor working environment.

"Time to bite the bullet and fix this as quickly and efficiently as possible.

"We need a real infrastructure plan for America and Amtrak and the LIRR!"
