Vice-Chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus Suozzi Calls for Bipartisanship to Avoid Government Shutdown

Today, Problem Solvers Caucus Vice-Chair Tom Suozzi (D -- Long Island, Queens) along with Co-Chairs Democrat Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) and Republican Tom Reed (NY-23) announced that the bipartisan Caucus will support a FY17 spending bill, avoiding a government shutdown, if it is both a clean bill and without any ideological riders. This official position was adopted with the approval of more than 75% of both parties' Problem Solvers Caucus Members.

"As Vice-Chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass a clean spending bill without any ideological riders," said Suozzi. "Now is the time for Republicans and Democrats to come together and do what's right for the American people."

The Problem Solvers Caucus is composed of 40 Members of Congress, evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, who are committed to working together on a bipartisan basis to get past the gridlock and get things done on the issues that matter to the American people.

"I have been steadfast in my commitment to go to Washington to find common ground with other leaders and solve some of our most serious problems," said Suozzi, "and the intention of the Problem Solvers Caucus is to work across the aisle to avoid a government shutdown."

"With so many pressing issues facing our country, we owe it to our constituents to work together to keep the lights on and avoid another expensive shutdown that would weaken our economy and undermine our national security," continued Suozzi.

Congress must pass an appropriations bill by the current funding deadline on April 28 in order to avoid a shutdown.
