Luján Says Senate Version of Trumpcare "Mean and Heartless'

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) today released the following statement after Senate Republicans unveiled a discussion draft of their Trumpcare legislation:

"Senate Republicans have finally revealed the Trumpcare discussion draft they worked so hard to hide from the American people -- and our friends across the aisle can try to spin it any way they want, but this bill is just as mean and heartless as the one Republicans jammed through the House earlier this year."

"Whether it's the House bill or the Senate bill, Trumpcare means higher health costs like premiums and deductibles, kicking tens of millions of hard-working Americans off their health plans, gutting protections for those with pre-existing conditions, targeting those between the ages of 55 and 64 with a crushing age tax, and stealing from Medicare"

"Senate Republicans are financing this Trumpcare bill on the backs of the most vulnerable in our society -- children and pregnant women, families living paycheck to paycheck, and seniors -- especially those who receive a pension and Social Security. It will also destroy critical jobs in communities all across America."

"Congressional Republicans shut the American people out of writing Trumpcare, and if this bill passes, the American people will be shut out of affordable health care too. Now, after crafting this monstrosity in secret, the GOP wants to rush it to the floor before the American people see the damage it will do -- abandoning any pretense of respect for the democratic process and the people who will bear the brunt of this bill."

"Democrats in Congress and across the country will continue to fight with all our strength to protect vulnerable seniors, children and hard-working families from Trumpcare's assault on their health care."
