Luján Calls House Passage of Trumpcare Bill "Shameful'

Statement

Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) today issued the following statement after the House approved the GOP's healthcare repeal bill on a straight party line vote:

"Despite Republican claims to the contrary, passage of this bill will kick 15 to 24 million off of their insurance plans; it strips away guaranteed protections for those with preexisting conditions; it will raise premiums and deductibles for those lucky enough to still have insurance when the dust settles; it slaps an onerous age tax on those over 50 and it will cause states to ration care and curb benefits for millions more.

The frantic effort by President Trump and House Republicans to ram through a harmful and disastrous healthcare repeal bill today -- with no hearings, with no idea what it will cost or how many people's lives and health will be destroyed -- is nothing short of shameful.

In short, this bill is bad for seniors; it's bad for veterans; and it's bad for middle-class and working families -- the only people it is good for is Donald Trump and Paul Ryan and their political base. But if this bill ever becomes law, I think Republicans will pay a very steep price when the American people see how harmful this shortsighted and misguided policy will be for them and their families."
