Luján Statement on Executive Order Regarding National Monument Designations

Statement

Date: April 26, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) today issued the following statement after President Trump signed an executive order calling into question dozens of national monuments proclaimed by the last three presidents -- including the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument near Taos. Trump's executive order could set aside designations that affect millions of acres nationwide -- public lands that are now protected from development.

"The Río Grande del Norte leaves a lasting impression on all those who visit and all those who benefit from the land -- whether through recreation or ranching. More than that, national parks and public lands help define who we are as a nation. Attempts to revoke or change the designation of national monuments are an assault on our nation's historical, cultural and natural heritage. The decision to designate the Río Grande del Norte a National Monument was strongly supported by the local community and members of the New Mexico Congressional delegation. I stand ready fight against any attempt to undermine the Río Grande del Norte National Monument -- this treasure of northern New Mexico must be protected and preserved for future generations."
