Gov. Scott: Miami Area Added More Than 24,000 New Jobs Over the Year

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Miami area added 24,600 new private-sector jobs in the last year. The unemployment rate in Miami was 4.9 percent in June, down 0.7 percentage point from a year ago. Statewide, Florida businesses created 17,800 new jobs in June and the unemployment rate dropped to 4.1 percent, the lowest rate since June 2007. Since December 2010, Florida businesses have created 1,397,400 new private-sector jobs.

Governor Scott said, "I am proud to announce today that Florida's unemployment rate has dropped to 4.1 percent- the lowest rate in 10 years. Like the rest of the state, the Miami area continues to experience impressive job growth with more than 24,000 new jobs created over the past year, and we will keep fighting to make Florida a national leader for job creation."

The industries with the highest growth over the year in Miami were education and health services with 8,100 new jobs; trade, transportation and utilities with 7,600 new jobs; and leisure and hospitality with 6,000 new jobs. The Miami area continued to rank third among the state's metro areas with 28,505 openings, and once again offered the third-highest number of high-skill, high-wage STEM jobs with 7,516 openings.

For 63 consecutive months, Florida's annual job growth rate of 3.1 percent is exceeding the nation's rate of 1.7 percent. In June, 22,977 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource South Florida and the state's other 23 local workforce boards.
