Congresswoman Claudia Tenney Supports Measures That will begin Restoring Local Control to Schools

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R--NY) voted in support of two measures, H.J. Res. 57 and H. J. Res. 58, that would begin to restore local control to our education system.

The first measure, H.J. Res. 57 will rollback unilateral federal control of our education system by ensuring that states are charged with developing accountability standards. While H. J. Res. 58 will stop the implementation of a rule submitted by the Department of Education that would evaluate our teachers based almost solely on student outcomes.

"Encouraging high standards in our classrooms is critical to the success of our students, however mandates passed down from the Obama administration have given federal bureaucrats the authority to judge our students and teachers based on a flawed set of one-size-fits-all standards. We must treat our teachers like the professionals they are, and stop evaluating them on an unrealistic and unfair system. That approach will only lead to the loss of good teachers which will put our neediest schools in jeopardy. These measures will bring us one step closer to finally restoring local control to our schools which will empower our teachers, parents and students."
