Adams Statement on the Impact of Trump's Budget on HBCUs

Statement

Date: May 23, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) released the following statement after the administration announced its proposed budget for FY 2018.

"Since his inauguration, President Trump has claimed HBCUs are a priority for his administration but time and time again his actions have proved otherwise," said Congresswoman Adams. "This budget, which includes a $142 million cut to TRIO, slashes $141 million from GEAR UP funding, and removes $95 million from AID for Institutional Development, guts the support programs that build a pipeline of deserving students to these colleges and universities and lacks much needed resources for infrastructure improvements.

"Since this administration has failed to honor their promise, Congress must support a budget that increases resources for HBCU infrastructure improvements and contains robust funding for TRIO, GEAR UP, federal work-study, and other essential financial aid programs that enhance opportunities for students."
