Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation sponsored by newly elected Congressman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) that would protect taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortions through government programs, like Medicaid. The legislation does so by making the Hyde Amendment permanent and government-wide. In support of the legislation, Arrington gave a heartfelt speech on the House Floor.
Although the Hyde Amendment bars certain federal funds from being used to cover abortions, a report by the non-partisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that over one-thousand Obamacare plans cover abortion.
In regards to the legislation, Arrington released the following statement:
"Our Constitution clearly defines that ALL Americans -- even those who cannot vote, speak, or defend themselves -- have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
"Human life is a gift from God and I am proud to support a critical piece of legislation that defends the unborn. This is an area where the Constitution, my constituents, and my convictions will not allow me to budge."
