DURBIN STATEMENT REGARDING ILLINOIS DROUGHT
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement after his meeting with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns, Senator Barack Obama, and Illinois Director of Agriculture Chuck Hartke regarding the severe drought affecting Illinois:
"Today, I thanked Secretary Johanns for designating the majority of Illinois counties as agriculture disaster areas. USDA's decision comes at an important time - the period from March to June of this year was the third driest in Illinois in more than 100 years."
"But the disaster designation is only a first step. If USDA does not devote sufficient funds and efforts to addressing the drought, I am ready to offer legislation to direct any additional funds to Illinois that may be necessary."
"Last week, I invited Secretary Johanns to Illinois so that he may see the affected farms and communities first hand. I look forward to working with him and USDA to deliver relief to Illinois farm families."
