DelBene Demands Trump's Tax Returns

Press Release

Date: March 28, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today voted in support of a resolution that would have forced the release of President Trump's tax returns.

"This President is breaking 40 years of precedent with his alarming lack of financial transparency, and his refusal to release his tax returns is a serious red flag. Given the President's evasive maneuvering, Congress has a constitutional responsibility to obtain the records needed to perform rigorous, unbiased oversight," DelBene said. "If the President is serious about working on tax reform, people deserve to know what conflicts of interest -- foreign or domestic -- may influence his decision-making. If he has nothing to hide, why not release his returns?"

DelBene serves on the House Ways and Means Committee. There is a rule that allows the Chairman of that committee to demand the release of anyone's tax returns. DelBene joined her fellow Democrats in voting for the Chairman to use that power, but Republicans defeated the measure on Tuesday. She spoke ahead of the vote.

DelBene is a cosponsor of Rep. Bill Pascrell's (NJ-09) resolution that would force the Treasury Secretary to turn over Trump's tax returns to the Committee to review his conflicts of interest, foreign ties and tax payment history.
