Continuing to advocate for U.S. military superiority and the Alabamians working to support it, Senator Luther Strange (R-AL) on Thursday joined Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) in introducing the Securing the Homeland by Increasing our Power on the Seas (SHIPS) Act. The bill would set a policy commitment to achieve the U.S. Navy's requirement of a 355-ship fleet. By granting longer-term certainty to the annual appropriations process, the SHIPS act would allow for an optimal mix of platforms across the fleet, equipping it to face emerging threats.

"We need a strong Navy to project American power and secure our nation's interests around the globe," said Wicker. "The Navy has set a clear requirement for 355 ships -- an objective that is achievable in the coming years with prudent planning and sufficient resources. Building up our fleet is a national project and should be a source of national pride. By establishing the 355 ship goal as national policy, the "SHIPS Act' will keep us focused on this critical endeavor."

"President Trump's commitment to rebuilding our military is crystal clear," said Strange. "As a member of the Armed Services Committee, I am working to ensure that Alabama will remain a leader in developing and delivering the capabilities that our men and women in uniform need. This bill sends a critical message that Congress is ready to back the U.S. Navy, and the Alabamians who support its missions, and I am proud to support it."
