Today, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after votingto confirmSecretary of Defense nominee General James Mattis:
"After reviewing his testimony, I voted to confirmGeneral James Mattis because he clearly has the qualifications and character necessary to serveas Secretary of Defense. It is critical, however, that we have strong civilian oversight of the military and that a wide range of perspectives are represented at the decision-making table.The waiverCongressapproved to allowGeneral Mattisto serve in this capacity should not be a regular practice. I look forward to working with General Mattis to ensure that our service members have the resources and support they need to keep America safe, secure and free."
