Today, Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09) released the following statement in regards to the decision of the President of the Senate of Puerto Rico, Thomas Rivera Schatz, to rescind the administrative order approved in 2014 allowing transgender senate employees to use the bathroom and wear clothing consistent with their gender identity.
"I do not condone discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. I have spoken out against the revocation of rights of transgender students within the U.S. public-school system by not allowing them to use the bathroom of their choice. The Trump administration has lead the effort to reverse the civil rights progress under President Barack Obama for the LGBTQ community. I ask Senator Rivera Schatz to reconsider his decision in discriminating against the LGBTQ community in Puerto Rico."
