Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Response to Atrocities in Syria

Statement

Date: April 5, 2017
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today following President Trump's comments on Syria at a press conference this afternoon:

"The chemical weapons attack in Syria was a heinous war crime, and the Assad regime must be held accountable. The President's statements and actions thus far, dating back to 2013 -- urging that no action ought to be taken in response to Syrian chemical attacks and now equivocating about how to respond -- has empowered Assad to violate international law and commit war crimes. I believed before, as I do now, that action ought to be taken to hold Assad accountable and that the entire civilized world must come together to act."
