Statement of the Governor on the Fatal Accident at the Boy Scouts of America 2005 National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill

Governor Mark R. Warner issued the following statement tonight after learning of the accidental deaths of several Boy Scouts of America leaders on opening day of the 2005 National Jamboree, being held at Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green:

"I want to reassure the parents of the young men attending the Jamboree that a remarkable amount of effort and resources have been brought to bear by the Boy Scouts and their hosts, the Department of Defense, in the planning and safety considerations involved in creating, in effect, a city of 43,000 inhabitants for a ten-day period.

"On behalf of all Virginians, to the families and friends of those killed and injured, and to the millions of friends and supporters of Scouting around the world, I extend my heartfelt condolences.

"All of us hope and pray that the remainder of the 2005 National Jamboree will offer a safe and educational experience for these young men and their adult leaders."
