Cornyn Appears on Fox News Sunday

Statement

Date: April 10, 2017
Location: Austin, TX

Today U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) appeared on Fox News Sunday to discuss the airstrikes in Syria, the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the upcoming deadline to fund the federal government. Excerpts from his appearance are below, and video of his remarks can be found here.

On the Airstrikes in Syria:

"It's to send a message to Assad and to the Russians and Iranians and North Koreans that there's a new Administration in charge of our national security policy. I applaud the President for doing what he did to enforce that red line that President Obama drew three years ago, but did nothing to enforce."

"I think that, along with my friend, Ben Cardin, Congress needs to work with the President to try to deal with this long-term strategy, lack of strategy, really, in Syria. We haven't had one for six years during the Obama Administration, and 400,000 civilians have died and millions of people have been displaced internally and externally in Europe and elsewhere. We definitely need a strategy. We need to work with the White House to come up with one that has bipartisan support."

On the Confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch:

"This is really a restoration of the status quo before the George W. Bush Administration when there was no such thing as filibustering judges, particularly judges on the Supreme Court."

"Here, Judge Gorsuch got bipartisan support, 54 votes in the Senate for his confirmation and he deserved it."

On the Upcoming Deadline to Fund the Government:

"This is a test for the new Democratic Leader, Senator Chuck Schumer, as well as the Administration. They're going to be the ones ultimately who negotiate this. There's not going to be a shutdown. I'm confident that we will come up with something that everybody can live with."
