Vietnam War Memorial Dedication Information Available at Rally
Information about the South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial dedication will be available to rallygoers at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this year. State volunteers will be on hand at the booth in the Sturgis Community Center, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. (MDT) on Aug. 6-13. The Community Center is located at 1401 Lazelle Street.
Gov. Mike Rounds is encouraging veterans from the Vietnam era to visit the booth and register. "We want to make sure every Vietnam era veteran gets an invitation to the dedication next year, and it will help complete our records of those who served for our state and our nation," he said.
An additional information booth will be set up at the Buffalo Chip on Monday, Aug. 8 as part of the day's Tribute to America's Veterans. The booth at the Buffalo Chip will be open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. (MDT) that day.
Donations for the memorial's construction and dedication will also be accepted at the booths.
The Vietnam War Memorial will be dedicated on Sept.15-16, 2006. It will feature a 7-foot bronze statue of an American soldier in jungle battle gear, and will join the bronze statues in honor of World War II and Korean War veterans on the Capitol grounds.
