KAPTUR WARNS OF A MIDNIGHT SURPRISE ON CAFTA

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-9) tonight warned of a midnight surprise for tonight's expected vote on the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Kaptur led the fight against the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) over ten years ago and has continued to assess the negative impact of NAFTA on American jobs.

"We're expecting a vote in the dark of night tonight on CAFTA," said Kaptur. "The Republican leadership has done it before and they'll do it again. Late at night when the American public is asleep, they will attempt to cajole, bribe or will simply outlast CAFTA opponents in order to steal votes to expand a trade policy that has already sucked out a million U.S. jobs."

"CAFTA is about expanding the NAFTA model to six other countries, providing more export platforms to the United States," Kaptur continued. "Goods, both agricultural and manufactured will continue to be back-doored into this country, providing none of the advances in freedom, liberty, opportunity and hope that should be the hallmark of this country at home and abroad."

"CAFTA is another outsourcing agreement that will ship out more of American jobs while promoting misery and poor labor conditions in Central America as our trade deficit worsens."

Kaptur continues to fight against the trade agreement that would expand NAFTA to Central America and the Dominican Republic and will actively engage on the side of workers for upcoming trade negotiations.
