Roberts Must Respect Constitutional Right to Privacy
WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement on President Bush's nomination of John Roberts to the Supreme Court of the United States:
"I look forward to learning more about Judge Roberts's positions and opinions in the coming weeks. It is clear, however, that the public expects, and this country needs, a nominee who respects Supreme Court precedent, including the recognition that the Constitution guarantees a right to privacy.
While no one wants a contentious and divisive fight, the President's nomination to a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land is only complete with the advice and consent of the United States Senate. They have an obligation to thoroughly examine Judge Roberts's record and ensure that he is qualified and appropriate to serve."
