U.S. Senate Accepts Nomination of Lester Crawford

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today issued the following statement on the U.S. Senate vote to accept the nomination of Lester Crawford as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). DeLauro is ranking member of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over the FDA's budget.

"Now that this nomination has proceeded, I am hopeful that the serious scientific and management challenges facing FDA will be resolved. I look forward to pursuing these issues and holding Dr. Crawford accountable when he testifies before the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee."

The Fiscal Year 2006 House Agriculture Appropriations bill includes an amendment added by DeLauro in subcommittee that withholds 5 percent of funds from the FDA central offices until the head of the agency testifies regarding their budget request. The funding would not affect food or drug safety, only FDA's administrative offices.
