July 22, 2005
Welcome to my Washington Update, an e-mail newsletter for the constituents
of California's 29th Congressional District. Through these quick-read
updates, I hope to keep you informed of progress being made in Washington,
D.C. and at home on public policy issues of interest to our communities.
Judge John G. Roberts Nominated to the Supreme Court
On Tuesday President Bush nominated Judge John G. Roberts to serve as an
associate justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. Roberts is
currently a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He
started his career as a clerk, first for a federal appeals court judge, then for
Justice William Rehnquist. He has also served as associate White House
Counsel in the Reagan White House and Deputy Solicitor General under
Kenneth Starr.
"I am looking forward to learning more about Judge Roberts during the
upcoming Senate Judiciary Committee Hearings," said Schiff. "The
confirmation process must be thorough in the examination of Judge Robert's
judicial philosophy and commitment to individual rights and freedoms, and it
should be conducted with great seriousness and civility."

Schiff Applauds Israel's UN Election
Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) introduced a resolution this week
congratulating Israel on the election of its UN Ambassador, Dan Gillerman, as
a Vice-President of the United Nations. Ambassador Gillerman will be only
the second Israeli General Assembly Vice-President in UN history. The last
was in 1952 when Abba Eban held the position. Schiff was joined by
Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH), vice-chairman of the Middle East and
South Asia Subcommittee of the House International Relations Committee.
The resolution applauds the election of Israel's Ambassador as Vice-President
and calls on Congress to support continued expansion of Israel's role at the
United Nations. "Israel's election victory is a step in the right direction after
decades of unstinting and undeserved criticism at the UN," said Schiff.
Schiff Supports Filipino American Bill
2006 will mark the centennial of Filipino immigration to the United States.
This week Congressman Schiff co-sponsored a resolution that marks the
contributions of the over 2 million Filipino Americans living and working in
our country.
"I am pleased to honor the Filipino American community on this special
anniversary," said Schiff. "I hope many of my constituents will take the
opportunity to come to Washington next year when the Smithsonian will be
hosting the Filipino American Centennial Commemoration to showcase the
experiences of Filipino Americans through special events and public
programs."
