Peters Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Statement

U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

"As we honor the legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr., we remember his steadfast dedication to the pursuit of justice, equality and tolerance for people of all different backgrounds and beliefs, and celebrate his commitment to protecting our fundamental civil rights. Dr. King sought to bring Americans from all walks of life together to strengthen our country, and his message of compassion, kindness and hope reminds us that America is at its best when we are united in a common purpose.

"At a time when our nation is deeply divided, we cannot allow ourselves to turn against one another. We must strive to bridge our differences and work together to ensure that every American--no matter who they are or where they live--has access to clean air and clean water, quality schools, opportunities for economic advancement, affordable health care, and the ability to make their voices heard at the ballot box. These rights are the cornerstones of the American Dream, and we must keep fighting to protect them for all Americans."

"I urge Michiganders to join together on this day of service, follow Dr. King's example and give back to their communities so we can help make his dream a reality for future generations of Americans."
