Governor Rick Scott announced today that the Miami area added 15,800 new private-sector jobs over the year in October. Miami's unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in October, down 0.6 percentage point in the last year. Florida businesses created 8,900 private-sector jobs across the state during October 2016, bringing the total number of jobs created since December 2010 to 1,232,400 jobs.
Governor Scott said, "In the past year, Miami businesses added more than 15,000 new jobs, providing new opportunities for thousands of Florida families. Our efforts to cut taxes and reduce regulations are helping businesses in Miami succeed and we will keep doing everything we can to make Florida first in the nation for jobs."
The industries with the most job growth over the year in Miami were professional and business services with 5,400 new jobs and construction with 3,800 new jobs. Miami had the third-highest job demand in Florida with 27,998 job openings in October. The area also had the third-highest number of openings for high-skill, high-wage STEM occupations with 7,017 online openings.
The state's unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in October, as a result of the rapidly growing labor force which nearly doubled over the month. For the 55th consecutive month, Florida's annual job growth rate of 3.3 percent is exceeding the nation's rate of 1.8 percent. Nearly 38,000 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource South Florida and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
