Gov. Scott: Orlando Area Continues to Lead the State in Job Creation

Governor Rick Scott announced today that the Orlando area continues to lead the state in job creation, adding 45,300 new private-sector jobs over the year in October. The unemployment rate in Orlando was 4.5 percent, dropping by 0.2 percentage point in the last year. Florida businesses created 8,900 private-sector jobs across the state during October 2016, bringing the total number of jobs created since December 2010 to 1,232,400 jobs.

Governor Scott said, "I am proud to announce that Orlando continues to lead the state in job creation, with more than 45,000 new jobs available for Central Florida families this year. We are committed to continuing this impressive job growth across the state so every Floridian has the chance to get a job and achieve their dreams."

The industries with the most job growth over the year in the Orlando area were leisure and hospitality with 14,900 new jobs; construction with 10,800 new jobs; and education and health services with 9,800 new jobs. Orlando led the state in job creation in these industries.

In October, the Orlando area continued to have the second-highest job demand of all the metro areas in Florida with 32,769 job openings. The area also had the second-highest demand for high-skill, high-wage STEM occupations with 9,361 openings.

The state's unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in October, as a result of the rapidly growing labor force which nearly doubled over the month. For the 55th consecutive month, Florida's annual job growth rate of 3.3 percent is exceeding the nation's rate of 1.8 percent. Nearly 38,000 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Central Florida and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
