Students who live or attend school in the 1st Congressional District will have a unique opportunity to design an app at the behest of Congress.
Representative Suzanne Bonamici's office announced last week that students of high school age and younger are eligible to create and submit the cell phone application.
"Creativity and innovation are key to our economy and essential to future economic growth," Bonamici said in a press release. "The Congressional App Challenge is a great opportunity for students to display their skills and show their creativity in a project that engages both halves of the brain."
The congresswoman speaks from experience as she is the founder and co-chairman of a Congressional caucus which advocates for the implementation of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) in the schools.
"By supporting and recognizing young programmers," a release from her office said, "Congress is acknowledging the growing importance of these fields."
Students in the 1st District and across the nation will compete by creating and demonstrating an app for mobile, tablet or computer devices. A panel of experts will then review the submissions for creativity, originality, user experience and design, among other criteria.
Students must submit their apps' source code online before Nov. 2, as well as provide a video demonstration of their work and what they learned through the competitive process.
Winners from each participating congressional district will be acknowledged in a district award ceremony and featured on the House.gov website. There will also be a display in the U.S. Capitol Building to honor the winners.
