Duckworth Applauds $80 Million Federal Award for Eighth District's Gas Technology Institute

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) today congratulated Des Plaines-based energy research and development organization Gas Technology Institute (GTI) after learning they were selected by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory to receive $80 million in federal funding for the development, construction and maintenance of a supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) pilot power plant. The pilot would work to advance clean energy by improving power plant efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. GTI will be partnering with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and GE Global Research on the project.

"GTI is a large part of our community and I'm proud of their work to support our country's energy sector," said Congresswoman Duckworth. "I'm pleased they were selected for this pilot project by the Department of Energy to help address some of the energy challenges we face today with innovative technology solutions."

Congresswoman Duckworth has worked to support state-of-the-art sustainable energy research and development, visiting GTI in 2014 to learn firsthand about their developments in advanced biofuels. She also announced millions of dollars in federal funding in previous grants to help GTI develop new technologies and grow well-paying, local jobs. GTI, who recently celebrated their 75th anniversary, has released additional information on the sCO2 pilot project here.
