Burr Tries to Spin His Record of Making Washington Work for Him

Press Release

Date: Oct. 17, 2016
Location: Raleigh, NC

Feeling the pressure of the increased scrutiny of his 20-plus years in Washington, Senator Richard Burr is hoping to cover up some of the headlines about his special interest-funded travel, his vote to ban insider trading by members of Congress, his seven votes to raise his own pay even as he's opposed raising the minimum wage, and how his personal wealth has increased more than 500 percent.

Senator Burr's press release is missing a few highlights, so we've included them here:

He was one of only three senators who voted no on a ban on insider trading by members of Congress -- while pushing bills that would benefit his own stocks -- and then called his vote "brave."

He took nearly 30 trips worth more than $100,000 paid for by special interests. In fact, the energy industry paid for Senator Burr's travel to Paris, Marseille, Barcelona & Madrid. And he opposed measures to regulate that type of travel and limit the influence of Washington lobbyists.

He increased his personal wealth by over 500% during 20-plus years in Washington, repeatedly voted to raise his own salary, and voted to raise taxes on workers and families while cutting them for millionaires like himself.

He took more than $1 million from insurance companies and wrote a plan that would turn Medicare into a voucher program, then tried to back away from it as the election approached.

Senator Burr has spent 20-plus years in Congress making sure Washington works for him and the special interests, but not for North Carolina. And that's why more and more voters agree it is time for a change.
