Congressman Thompson Says Next Justice Must Be Committed To 'An Independent Judiciary'

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement in anticipation of President Bush's pending Supreme Court nomination:

"Any successful nominee should possess both the temperament to interpret the law and the wisdom to do so fairly. The next Supreme Court Justice should have a record of protecting individual rights and a strong willingness to put aside any political agenda. This country needs a [Supreme Court] Justice who will render decisions based on the law, not based on their personal feelings."

"As the Senate considers the nominee, I trust that they will conduct an in-depth review based on the merits."
