Ayotte: Set Aside Politics to Keep Government Open

Statement

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte released the following statement today regarding the Senate's failure to advance legislation to fund the government through December 9th.

"While I would have preferred to consider and pass individual spending bills through the regular appropriations process, I voted for today's short-term legislation to avoid a government shutdown and provide important funding for our military, veterans, and families in New Hampshire and across the country," said Senator Ayotte. "At my urging, this short-term bill also includes new funding to kick-start implementation of some programs outlined in CARA to fight the heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid abuse epidemic. That's why I'm disappointed that my Democratic colleagues rejected it today."

"Rather than dragging us to the brink of a government shutdown to score political points during an election year, we should pass a bipartisan bill to keep the government open. New Hampshire families deserve better from Congress, and I'll keep fighting to ensure we fund the government before this Friday's deadline."
