Hoeven Calls For Go-Slow Approach To Canadian Cattle Imports

Calls For Aggressive Effort To Open U.S. Export Markets

Gov. John Hoeven today said an appellate court decision handed down yesterday that lifts an injunction banning Canadian cattle imports will open the border prematurely. He urged a go-slow approach to cattle imports, and encouraged a parallel effort to open export markets for American beef abroad to ensure fairness to American producers.

"Cattle ranching is an extremely important industry to North Dakota and the United States, and our beef is of the highest quality in the world," Hoeven said. "We need a go-slow approach to reopening the border to make sure we have the controls in place to maintain both the quality and safety of our beef products. At the same time, we should be pressing aggressively to open export markets abroad, especially in Japan, to ensure that our ranchers are treated fairly."
